Stop One Suicide

what is
wighita press?
Wighita Press was created after I’d completed my PhD research which highlighted many risk factors that when combined increased the risk of suicide attempts occurring.
The first book I wrote to help troubled teenagers came about after the Director of Nursing at the psychiatric facility I was working at, as a registered nurse, asked the staff to “be creative” when trying to engage with the children.
WARM FUZZIES AND COLD PRICKLIES
I wrote a short story about Claude Steiner’s concept of Warm Fuzzies and Cold Pricklies, called “What’s inside your Fuzzy Bag?”
The children loved it and immediately understood the concept that positive behaviour elicits positive consequences and negative behaviour prompts negative consequences, and that everyone has a choice as to how they behave.
We made a game of chasing away the Cold Pricklies or stamping on them.
I wrote two more therapeutic “fables” and that led onto writing the first book entitled, “I only said I wanted to kill myself; I didn’t really mean it.” I sent it off to several publishers and although many liked it, none could commit to publishing a series of ten books, so as I considered all the risk factors to be important to address, Wighita Press was born.
After all ten therapeutic novels were published, I went on to write other books about mental health issues, and the literary journey is ongoing.
