Is Beach Haven a real place?Having grown up on an island, the Isle of Wight, I've always been near a beach and appreciate the peace it brings me, so the safe space for troubled children to go to had to be named “Beach Haven”. The milieu mirrors a residential facility in Birmingham, U.K. that I was lucky enough to experience during my Transactional Analysis training. There was no shouting or punitive adults with unresolved issues, it was a place that truly changed troubled teenagers’ lives. It was “a place to rest and grow”. If I was ever to win the lottery I would recreate Beach Haven physically!

Other books written by Dr. Celia BantingI have written a book to help adults identify whether their teenager may be at risk of attempting suicide and it’s called, “How to tell if your teenager is at risk of suicide”. It is definitely not for teenagers to read. The Right Thing is an account of a four month period in my life when I found myself lodging with a deranged young woman who was trying to kill her mother. The Ward: Being a Patient During a Pandemic is an illustrated biographical work written in Lockdown during Covid-19 in 2020. This book is hard back and a work of art. It’s available to mail in the United States but the mailing costs make it prohibitive to mail abroad, however, it is available on Amazon Kindle.

What age range are they suitable for?Ages 12 onwards to adulthood.
-
Do you accept purchase orders?Yes.
-
Can adults benefit from reading the I Only Said books?Yes, definitely. Many adults carry their childhoods around with them and have unresolved issues. There is no rule book for parenting and so they inadvertently pass on those issues to their children. It’s never too late to gain self-insight.
-
Are the covers soft or hard back?Paper back was chosen as teenagers in psychiatric facilities and JDC aren’t allowed hard back books that could be used as a weapon.
-
Are these books suitable for students entering the caring professions? (Teachers, nurses, social work, doctors)Absolutely! Teaching academic theories is only part of the caring professions; the most important part is self-awareness. Every adult that reads these books will emerge with a new-found “Frame of Reference,” a new perspective.

Are the books suitable for all teenagers? The books were written to address some serious issues that some teenagers and adults have to deal with. Many of the books teach coping skills that can help all adolescents develop into well-balanced adults, however, book 5, I Only Said I was Telling the Truth, addresses sexual abuse, and if a teenager has had no experience of that type of abuse, I wouldn’t suggest reading it. I do, however, believe that all young people should understand the process of grooming.
